Delicate Arch, Arches National Park |
Don't miss Arches National Park during your stay in Moab. Arches is 3 miles, about 5 minutes from the Moab Valley RV Resort & Campground where most of us are staying. Please come early on Tuesday (reunion check in is not until 4 pm) or visit Arches on Friday (reunion check out is 10 am) or even better, explore Arches on both days. With over 2,000 arches in the park, Arches has plenty to experience. Arches National Park is becoming more and more popular. Lines to enter the park can be lengthy. Carpool or go early. Arches is $25 for a 7 day pass. Seniors are eligible for a National Park Service lifetime pass for $10 which gets everyone in their car into the park. Seniors, that $10 is a great deal that will be ending soon. Read about it at sltrib.com. Another awesome deal is all 4th graders receive a year long family pass for free. Just ask at the gate.
Favorite hikes in Arches National Park include:
- Delicate Arch (pictured above & has become Utah's state symbol) at a little over 3 miles round trip with some moderately strenuous elevation gain--but totally worth it!
- Double Arch (pictured in the opening scenes of Indian Jones & the Last Crusade) at an easy half mile walk. The fun is in climbing up into the arch. Be careful!
- Sand Dune Arch is a very short walk (0.3 miles) out to a kid friendly arch tucked away in the fins with lots of sand.
- Landscape Arch (the longest spanned arch in the park) is an easy mile and a half round trip. To make it more of an adventure, continue out to Double O Arch via the top of a fin. The longer hike adds 3.5 miles.
- If you make time, the guided ranger tour of the Fiery Furnace is spectacular. Day of reservations are required.
- All hike information can be found at https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/hiking.htm.

Sand Hill, Moab |
Moab's Sand Hill is located across Highway 191 from the entrance to Arches National Park. About 100 feet high and 100 feet across of sand is a great place to let your kids wear themselves out.

River Rafting the Colorado River |
Travelers cross the Colorado River just before entering Moab from the north on Highway 191. Adventure awaits floating the river that cut the dramatic canyons through Utah and Arizona. Floating the river is scheduled for two trips on Wednesday morning and afternoon. Signed acknowledgement of risk forms for Canyon Voyages Adventure Company, where Johnny is renting the rafts are required. Don't forget your sun screen and to reapply it often. Also bring any dry bags you might have to protect your keys, phones and snacks.

Corona Arch, Moab |
Corona Arch is an amazing arch outside the boundaries of Arches National Park. The hike to the arch is on the reunion schedule for Wednesday night. It's hot. We'd rather hike at night. At approximately 3 miles round trip the well-maintained trail is a great hike for families. The hike has some ladders & climbing safety cables. Look for Bowtie Arch not far from Corona Arch. The trail head begins at Utah Scenic Byway 279, 10 miles west of Utah 279/U.S. 191 junction. It's about a 12 mile, 20 minute drive to the trail head from Moab Valley RV Resort. Watch out for rock climbers sharing the road.
And yes, Johnny & Chelsie rappelled off Corona Arch before it became illegal.
↠ Thursday
Chelsie free rappelling in Arches National Park |
The beautiful red rock land formations of Moab are an incredible backdrop for rappelling. Johnny and Chelsie are taking two rappelling group trips on Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon. Equipment is limited so bring your own if you have it. We need harnesses, carabiners and and any rappel devices.

Mill Creek North Fork Canyon Waterhole |
It's hot! Cool off in Mill Creek up North Fork Canyon. The easy hike can be a quarter mile to one mile depending on how far up the river you want to hike. A refreshing swimming hole, small waterfall and small rock water slides are part of the fun. Wear your water shoes and swimming suit. Watch for petroglyphs along the trail.
Stop at Milt's, the oldest restaurant in Moab, for famous burgers and shakes since 1954. Located at 356 E. Mill Creek Drive, Moab, about a mile & a half before Mill Creek North Fork Trailhead.
The trailhead is located on the south end of Moab. To get there from southbound US-191 (also Moab's Main Street), turn left on 300 South, then right on 400 East. Turn left onto east Mill Creek Drive. Follow the road as it winds out of town, then turn left on East Powerhouse Lane. There's a parking lot near the trailhead, which can get crowded on nice days. (sltrib.com)
A is for Ancestors. Put together your own Buchmiller Family History ABC book as you visit interactive family history displays. A Buchmiller family history talent show is also planned for Thursday night at the LDS Church at 701 E. Locust Lane in Moab. Thanks to all who have contributed to our final night event.
