Mesa Arch, Island in the Sky District, Canyonlands National Park |
Canyonlands National Park is also in the area. The park is divided into 3 districts with separate entrances. The Island in the Sky section is about 40 minutes north & then west of Moab. Entrance fees into Canyonlands National Park are the same, but separate from Arches National Park at $25 for a 7 day carload pass. Don't forget seniors can get a lifetime national park service pass for $10 for their carload and 4th graders can get a free annual pass for their family.
Favorite hikes in Canyonlands National Park include:
The Shafer Jeeping Trail is about a 20 mile off road adventure in Canyonlands National Park. A narrow road with sharp and steep switch backs on a high cliff with no guard rails requires great caution, strong nerves and a high clearance 4x4 vehicle. The scenery is breath taking, literally. Permits are not required on Shafer Trail, but it is a good idea to check in with the rangers at Canyonlands National Park before you begin. Maps are available. Some trails in the area do require a free day-use permit.
Various legends tout how Dead Horse Point State Park received its name. Dead Horse Point has been pictured in several movies, such as Mission Impossible 2 and Joe Dirt, replicating the Grand Canyon. The park is between Arches & Canyonlands National Parks about 40 minutes from Moab. Directions from Moab: Nine miles northwest of Moab on US 191 and then 20 miles southwest on Utah 313 to the end of the highway. The daily fee, good for 3 days, is $15 per vehicle up to eight passengers or $10 for seniors 62 and older.
Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail is a great place to see fossilized dinosaur bones and footprints via a self-guided tour. To reach the Mill Canyon Dinosaur trail head, drive 15 miles north of Moab on U.S. 191, then turn left at an intersection just north of highway mile marker 141. Cross the railroad tracks and continue 2 miles on a bladed dirt road to the Dinosaur trail head. The road is impassable when wet.
Rotary Park, located at 680 E. Millcreek Drive, Moab, "is a beautiful little park near Milt's burgers, the oldest restaurant in Moab. Order your meal to go and picnic in the park. There are traditional monkey bars and such but the highlights are the nearby shady stream and the huge musical playground section where kids can bang away to their hearts' content."
Favorite hikes in Canyonlands National Park include:
- Mesa Arch (pictured above) is an easy half mile walk to an arch on a cliff's edge.
- Upheaval Dome is a 1 mile loop around an interesting rock formation.
